"The goal of JHelioviewer, and the Helioviewer Project as a whole, is to offer intuitive interfaces to large datasets from many different sources. It also allows data to be annotated, say, solar flares of a particular magnitude to be marked or diseased tissues in medical images to be highlighted. This is because JHelioviewer does not need to download entire datasets, which can often be huge - it can just choose enough data to stream smoothly over the Internet. Cwa never fail chocolate cake, The x files alien baseball player. It is open-source software, meaning that all its components are freely available so others can help to improve the program. JHelioviewer is written in the Java programming language, hence the 'J' at the beginning of its name. This is an interactive visual archive of the entire SOHO mission." With JHelioviewer, everyone can do this in minutes. "Before, it took hours to combine images from different telescopes to make a movie of the Sun for a given period. ![]() "We wanted to make it easy to view solar images from different observatories and instruments, and to make it easy to make movies," says Daniel Müller, ESA SOHO Deputy Project Scientist. They can export their finished movies in various formats, and track features on the Sun by compensating for solar rotation. Using this new software, users can create their own movies of the Sun, colour the images as they wish, and image-process the movies in real time. The downloadable JHelioviewer is complemented by the website, a web-based image browser. More than a million images from SOHO can already be accessed, and new images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory are being added every day. The JHelioviewer user inter- face (Fig.1) has two panels to present solar data. The software code is split into two parts: one that denes what is displayed and how, and one that performs the rendering. Developed as part of the ESA/NASA Helioviewer Project, it provides a desktop program that enables users to call up images of the Sun from the past 15 years. JHelioviewer is capable of fetching, displaying, manipulating, and exporting solar data and events. This is done to maintain homogeneity with the existing images we already provide, and makes it easy to compare images from multiple telescopes.JHelioviewer is new visualisation software that enables everyone to explore the Sun. We anticipate that services will be suspended for about 24 hours. The outage is anticipated to start around 4pm Eastern Standard Time. Our science data processing software – JP2Gen – now takes account of the new rotation of SOHO and rotates SOHO science data appropriately. Helioviewer Project services (, and JHelioviewer connections at NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center) will be suspended temporarily later today (6 March 2017) for necessary maintenance. At the Helioviewer Project, we rotate the data so that solar north is towards the top of your screen and the rotation axis of the Sun is vertical (i.e., parallel to the left and right hand side of a rectangular screen). ![]() The raw image data that SOHO takes therefore shows the new orientation. SOHO will still flip 180 degrees in order to maintain optimal communication with the Earth, but the rotation will now flip the spacecraft relative to ecliptic north. SOHO now points to ecliptic north, which makes an approximate seven degree angle with the equator of the Sun. Around 9-30 the SOHO spacecraft changed flight operations so it is no longer constantly aligned with the rotation axis of the Sun. ![]()
